১. Idiom ও Phrase কী? #
- Phrase (শব্দগুচ্ছ): দুই বা ততোধিক শব্দের সমষ্টি যা বাক্যে একটি একক পার্টস অব স্পিচ হিসেবে কাজ করে, কিন্তু যার কোনো নিজস্ব Finite Verb (সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া) থাকে না।
- Idiom (বাগধারা): এমন এক বিশেষ ধরনের Phrase যার আক্ষরিক অর্থ (Literal Meaning) এবং প্রকৃত ভাবার্থ (Figurative / Metaphorical Meaning) সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন।
বাস্তব উপমা: বাংলায় আমরা যখন কাউকে বলি— ‘লোকটি ডুমুরের ফুল হয়ে গেছে’, তখন আক্ষরিক অর্থে উদ্ভিদের ফুল বোঝায় না; বোঝায় লোকটি ‘অদৃশ্য বা দুর্লভ’। একইভাবে ইংরেজিতে যখন বলা হয়— ‘It happens once in a blue moon’, তখন নীল চাঁদ বোঝায় না; বোঝায় ‘কদাচিৎ বা খুব বিরল ঘটনা’ (Very rarely)।

পরীক্ষায় যখন কোনো Idiom দেওয়া হয়, তখন ৪টি অপশনের মধ্যে অন্তত ১-২টি অপশনে শব্দটির আক্ষরিক অর্থ (Literal Meaning) সাজিয়ে রাখা হয় ফাঁদ হিসেবে।
